The ageing qualities of rubber are improved by the use of a substance having the general formula HO-R-R1-Y, in which R, R1 are aromatic hydrocarbon radicals, and Y is H or OH. Compounds specified include p-hydroxydiphenyl, o-hydroxydiphenyl, a - and b -p-hydroxyphenylnaphthalenes, 2 : 21-, 3 : 31-, and 4 : 41-dihydroxydiphenyls, 2 : 21-dihydroxy-1 : 11-dinaphthyl, 3 : 31-dihydroxy-2 : 21-dinaphthyl, 1 : 11-dihydroxy, 2 : 21-dinaphthyl, and 4 : 41-dihydroxy-2 : 21-dinaphthyl. These may be added to the mix before vulcanization, or vulcanized rubber may be treated with a solution, e.g. in ethylene glycol monomethyl ether.
