[Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii).] The whole, or the larger part, of the air for combustion, after being heated, is humidified to a predetermined degree under the control of a hygrostat or a thermo-regulator. As shown in Fig. 1, heated air enters at e a chamber a containing porous rings d. A hygrostat g actuates a valve h which admits warm water from the engine radiator R to the chamber a to maintain the humidity of the air constant. The water is kept at a constant level in the radiator R by a pump l which forces the water through a control valve m partly to the radiator R and partly through a pipe n into a supply tank T. In a modified construction, Fig. 2, a thermo-regulator g<1> operates a valve o, which maintains the temperature of the heated air entering at e constant by adding cold air, and the water valve h. The water is supplied in excess of the amount needed to saturate the air, the excess being removed by a pipe q. To prevent condensation of water in the induction pipe from the saturated air, cold air is added through a byepass s controlled by a valve r. Crank case fumes may be added to the top of the chamber a. In a further modification, the intake air is kept at a constant temperature by passing it through a heat exchanger where it extracts heat from a thermo-regulated water system. The heated air is then saturated with water.
