PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens advantageous for balancing between securing an angle of view at a wide angle end as well as a variable power ratio and achieving a miniaturization. SOLUTION: The present invention has: from an object side to an image side, a first lens group G1 having positive refractive power; a second lens group G2 having negative refractive power; a third lens group G3 having the positive refractive power; a fourth lens group G4 having the negative refractive power; and a fifth lens group G5 having the positive refractive power. When varying power from a wide angle end to a telephoto end, a prescribed conditional expression with respect to focal distances of respective lens groups is satisfied by: moving at least the first lens group G1, the second lens group G2, the third lens group G3 and the fourth lens group G4; expanding respective distances between the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2, between the third lens group G3 and the fourth lens group G4, and between the fourth lens group G4 and the fifth lens group G5 wider at the telephoto end than at the wide angle end; and shortening the distance between the second lens group G2 and the third lens group G3 narrower at the telephoto end than at the wide angle end.
