[Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii).] A "twin" flue heating arrangement with recirculation of combustion products between the downcast and upcast flues is applied to a bench setting for gas and other retorts. As shown, a heating chamber for fifteen retorts is divided by the vertical lines of retorts and the spacer members e, e<1> into separate flue spaces d, in turn divided by vertical partitions g into flues g<1>, g<2> connected in pairs by top and bottom ports g<3>, g<4>. Each flue g<1> is connected at its lower end, either directly, or through passages h<4>, h<3> to a pair of regenerators k<1> at one side of the bench, and the flues g2 are similarly connected to regenerators l<2> at the opposite side.
