PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the size of an automatic transmission by rationally arranging a brake which couples a ring gear of a planetary gear mechanism of the automatic transmission to a transmission case, and a clutch which couples the ring gear to an input shaft.SOLUTION: A clutch C3 which couples a ring gear Rd of a planetary gear mechanism PGSd to an input shaft 12 includes: a clutch hub 40 coupled to the input shaft 12; a clutch drum 39 having a cylinder part 39a coupled to the ring gear Rd; and a plurality of first friction engagement elements 41 which are arranged between an external peripheral part of the clutch hub 40 and an internal peripheral part of the cylinder part 39a. A brake B4 which couples the ring gear Rd to a transmission case 13 includes a plurality of second engagement elements 44 which are arranged between an external peripheral part of the cylinder part 39a and an internal peripheral part of the transmission case 13, the first friction engagement elements 41 and the second friction engagement elements 44 are overlapped on each other in the axial direction at least at a part of their one-side ends, and the ring gear Rd and the cylinder part 39a extend from a coupling part for coupling them toward directions opposite from each other along the axial direction. |
