The invention provides methods for producing Lactate by anaerobic Fermentation. According to particular methods of the invention, Lactate is produced by anaerobic fermentation of a substrate comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

1. A method of producing lactate by microbial fermentation, said method comprising:
continuously passing a gaseous substrate comprising CO to a bioreactor comprising a culture of a Clostridium autoethanogenum bacterium and anaerobically fermenting the substrate to produce lactate; wherein the Clostridium autoethanogenum bacterium comprises at least one lactate dehydrogenase gene and the lactate dehydrogenase gene is upregulated; and wherein the gaseous substrate comprising CO is provided such that a specific rate of CO uptake of at least 0.4 mmol CO/gram dry cells weight of bacteria/minute by the culture is maintained and lactate is produced at a productivity greater than 0.2 g/L/per day.
