A method of operating an inductive power transfer system 1, which may provide inductive charging to an electric vehicle or hybrid, includes a primary winding structure 10 for generating and transmitting an alternating electromagnetic field, and a secondary coil 10 for receiving the field and generating an AC output voltage. The output voltage is rectified and supplied to at least one energy storage element 12 such as a battery. The rectified output voltage is adjusted by varying a gap size between the wayside winding structure 10 and the vehicle side winding structure 10, wherein the distance between the primary and secondary coils 10 is adjusted to prepare, initiate or control an energy transfer process, depending on charging characteristics of the at least one energy storage element 12. Other means of changing the output voltage may be used, such as by varying the input voltage. The distance from the primary coil to the secondary coil may be held constant while a desired output voltage adjustment is achievable by adjusting the input voltage. |
