<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a control device of an internal combustion engine which can diagnose the presence or absence of response abnormality of a variable valve timing mechanism by suppressing the emission and power consumption of a battery even in the internal combustion engine in which a change in an operation state is small, and a control method of the internal combustion engine.SOLUTION: A variable valve timing mechanism diagnosis part (20) which diagnoses the presence or absence of response abnormality of a variable valve timing mechanism (10) has: a diagnosis execution condition determination part (M7) which outputs a diagnosis permission signal when an operation state satisfies a preset diagnosis execution condition; a target rotation phase angle switching part (M8) which switches a target rotation phase angle to a diagnosis target value; a diagnosis-time ignition timing correction part (M10) which calculates and corrects a diagnosis correction amount corresponding to the operation state; and an abnormality determination part (M9) which determines that the response abnormality has occurred in the variable valve timing mechanism when the deviation dr of the rotation phase angle satisfies the relationship |deviation dr|≥|deviation threshold dj| after the lapse of an execution time td.</p> |
