The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for monitoring an electric power load, and the objective of the present invention is to detect state change of the load by using a power factor of power consumption as a feature or detecting state change of the load, or using the power factor and an apparent power together. In monitoring the electric power load, another objective of the present invention is to identify the load using principle of superposition. For this, the apparatus for monitoring the electric power load according to the present invention may include: a sensor part for collecting power consumption information of a home appliance; and a control part for detecting an event related with power consumption occurred in the home appliance on the basis of power factor information of the power consumption information collected by the sensor part.
