PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods for the diagnosis and therapy of disorders of iron homeostasis.SOLUTION: This invention relates to the use of homologous of mature forms of human hepcidin or precursors thereof, or nucleic acids encoding the polypeptides, for vertebrate, preferably mammalian. Hepcidin can be used in the treatment of disorders resulting from iron overload, while inhibitors of hepcidin can be used in the treatment of anaemia.
