<p>The formation on the surface of a metal substrate of a protective coating containing aluminum is carried out by putting the substrate into contact with a non-gaseous precursor containing the aluminum, at an elevated temperature, with an atmosphere containing an active gas which reacts with the precursor to form a gaseous aluminum compound. This gaseous aluminum compound decomposes on contact with the substrate to deposit metallic aluminum. The atmosphere contains a gaseous compound of a modifying metal that decomposes on contact with the substrate to deposit the modifying metal simultaneously with the deposition of the aluminum.</p> |
