<p>An internal combustion engine (1) for a vehicle is provided with a manual transmission (4) and has a variable compression ratio mechanism, and a target compression ratio (tCR) thereof is found by referring to a compression ratio map in which target compression ratios are preassigned using demand load (tT) and engine speed (Ne) as parameters. The compression ratio map has a first compression ratio map (A) used for when the shift position of the transmission is in first or second gear, and a second compression ratio map (B) for third to fifth gear, wherein the first compression ratio map has a smaller compression ratio variation range than the second compression ratio map. Moreover, the compression ratio is fixed to be constant when the transmission is in the reverse position. Thus, unintended torque variation due to compression ratio variation when running in first gear, second gear, or reverse is suppressed.</p> |
