<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology for managing external lines, which sets an external key regardless of the physical number of external lines in a key telephone system. <P>SOLUTION: When sharing external lines in a key telephone system equipped with a main device and a plurality of terminals among the plurality of terminals, the relationship between a key ID to be assigned to one of external lines, a first key which is one of keys of a first terminal out of the plurality of terminals, and a second key which is one of keys of a second terminal which is one of the plurality of terminals and is different from the first terminal is stored in a storage device of the key telephone system. When one of the external lines is captured by the main device, one of unused key IDs corresponding to the first key is assigned to the captured external line with reference to the relationship and the second terminal is notified that it should capture the external line to which the key ID has been assigned by the other terminal.
