A vertical axis wind turbine, having two or more turbine blades 4 mounted for rotation about a turbine axis of rotation 20, a housing 2 mounted for rotation about an axis which is coaxial with but decoupled from the turbine axis of rotation, and housing orientation element 3 to rotate the housing. The housing has at one end a first channel a and a second channel b and the housing orientation element rotates the housing so that the one end is an upwind end. The first channel directs wind on blades moving downwind and the second channel directs wind on blades moving upwind such that torque is generated by a pair of tangential forces. Preferably the housing includes shields 7a and 7b which function to control a rotational speed of rotor 23. |
