Preparing a foamable polymer composition using expandable hollow microbeads, is claimed, where the process begins with two separate process strands, with expandable hollow microbeads being used only in one of the two separate process strands. Independent claims are included for: (1) process for foaming a foamable polymer composition comprising expansion of the hollow microbeads after mixing, preferably with simultaneous cooling of the polymer composition; and (2) foamed polymer composition comprising expanded hollow microbeads, obtained by the above process, where the fraction of caverns without their own polymer shell is not more than 2 vol.%, preferably not more than 0.5 vol.%.
