493,706. Supply systems for discharge lamps. QUARZLAMPEN GES. April 9, 1937, No. 10188. Convention date, April 9, 1936. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] In a high-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp a tungsten or like spiral 4 is used as (i) a heater or (ii) as means to compensate for red deficiency &c. when it is raised to incandescence; a potential divider consisting of resistances 6, 7 is provided so that the potential of the heater 4 corresponds to that of the arc at the point where the spiral is mounted. The voltage drop across the heater is made low. and the current supply may be taken by a coil 8 in inductive relationship with the ballast coil 9; to keep the voltage low at starting a special contact 10 is provided. The heater coil may be used at starting to produce a glow discharge. The heater is shown in the Figure arranged along the tube but as constructed it is transverse thereto. Several radiators may be used in one tube the potential divider being arranged to give appropriate voltage to each radiator.
