In the present invention, a target detection device is loaded onto a vehicle, and by receiving reflected radar waves which were transmitted outwards from a vehicle, the target detection device generates information pertaining to a target which reflected the radar waves. The target detection device transmits and receives the radar waves, detects the positions of reflection points where the radar waves were reflected, and generates information pertaining to the target from which the radar waves were reflected in accordance with the detection results. Using a reflection point of interest as a subject reflection point, the target detection device counts for every detected reflection point the number of reflection points which are found within a subject range that is set with reference to the subject reflection point and with which the difference in speed from the subject reflection point is a previously set same-speed determination threshold value or lower, and the target detection device extracts parallel traveling pairs, which are pairs of reflection points that satisfy a previously set parallel travelling condition. The target detection device determines the same target to be the cause of two reflection points constituting an extracted parallel traveling pair if the count value for at least one of the two reflection points constituting this parallel traveling pair is a previously set size determination threshold value or greater, and the target detection device generates target information that is reflective of the determination results. |
