[Class 94 (i)] A machine for distending collapsed cartons comprises a reciprocating bar which is inserted in each carton in succession to support it while it is partly distended by a folding - member moving transversely to the bar, and means for opening the carton fully and feeding it on to a support. The carton, which is used for retailing liquids, comprises a blank 1, Fig. 1, to be folded into a square-section tube with sides converging to a folded base. The flattened blanks are stacked on a base 5, Fig. 2, in front of a feed plate 20 which is urged forwards by the frictional drive of an endless belt 24. The plate presses the stack against a raised stop 19 and a folding-member 17 carried by a bar 8. A spreader bar 7, attached to a reciprocating carriage 16, moves across the front of the stack, and in its forward movement enters the first blank and supports the back walls of the blank against the pressure of the plate 20. The bar 8 is carried by a pair of swinging arms 9, and when the bar 7 has entered the blank fully, the arms 9 swing the bar 8 about the bar 7. The folding-member 17, which overlaps slightly the front edge of the first blank, partly opens the carton, and this movement presents one corner of the carton to a pair of rollers 10, 11. As soon as the bars 7, 8 return to their initial position, the rollers draw the partly-opened carton between them and deliver it to a shaping-plate 13 between ,a fixed abutment 13 and a reciprocating pusherplate 14 which co-operate to open the carton fully. Finally, a flange 16a attached to the reciprocating carriage 16 pushes the distended carton on to a support for conveyance to further operating-stages. |
