The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for transmitting/receiving a reference signal (RS) in a wireless communication system. A base station for transmitting a reference signal includes a downlink transmit path including circuitry configured to transmit eight reference signals in one sub-frame, wherein each of the reference signals corresponds to each antenna port and includes two slots. Each of the slots includes a plurality of OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) symbols. Each of the OFDM symbols includes a plurality of resource elements. The base station includes a reference signal controller configured to apply one code corresponding to an antenna port to a set of the resource elements, wherein the number of all antenna ports is based on the number of layers and at most two sets of the resource elements are enabled to be utilized in one sub-frame. Each set of the resource elements includes at most four reference signals and each antenna port is allocated to one code.
