<p>The purpose of the present invention is to reduce the effects of leakage from an optical coupling structure. The optical coupling structure is provided with a core, a first cladding, and a second cladding. The index of refraction of the core material is greater than the index of refraction of the material for the first cladding, and the index of refraction of the material for the first cladding is greater than the index of refraction of the material for the second cladding. The optical coupling structure supports a first group guided mode that propagates mainly in the core in at least an input end and a higher order second group guided mode that propagates mainly in the first cladding in at least the input end and is separated from the first group guided mode.</p> |
