Predicting fertility by examining functions of sperm present in an ejaculate of bull using functional, ejaculate-related quality assessment of the sperm of a bull, comprises determining the binding ability of at least a portion of the sperm from the ejaculate to fucose or a compound containing the fucose in a cell-free assay as a function of the sperm present in the ejaculate. The increased binding ability of the sperm containing the fucose or fucose compound indicates a higher fertilizing capacity of sperm and thus a higher quality of the ejaculate against a control.
