The present invention relates to a mobile terminal and a method for operating a modified keypad thereof, capable of displaying a display window on an empty space generated when a keypad is modified (divided or slid) and facilitating a text input for a target to be edited through the display window. The method for operating a modified keypad of a mobile terminal includes a step of displaying a target to be edited and a keypad on a screen; a step of modifying the keypad; a step of displaying a display window in an empty space generated when the keypad is modified; and a step of inputting text for the target to be edited through the display window and the modified keypad.
