The present invention relates to a composition comprising a Codium platylobium extract as an active ingredient to prevent hair loss or improve hair growth. According to the present invention, the composition comprising the Codium platylobium extract as an active ingredient to prevent hair loss or improve hair growth has an effect of inhibiting activation of 5α-reductase. Therefore, the composition of the present invention can usefully be used as a raw material for functional cosmetics, medicine, and food to prevent hair loss and improve hair growth; and has the advantage of being safe for a long-term usage since the composition is made from natural substances.
