The present invention relates to means for the isolation of nucleic acids, which in one enclosed unit comprises supply chambers (12) for separate, releasable storage of reagents, a receiving chamber (11) for placing therein a sample of biological material, a mixing chamber assigned to the supply chambers (12) and the receiving chamber (11). The outlet of the mixing chamber opens in a filtering chamber (32) whose outlet opens via a separation membrane (322) in a discharge chamber (41) or a reaction chamber (42), whereby only the receiving chamber (11) is provided with a lid (111) that can be opened and closed by attendance (111). The invention also relates to a method of isolating nucleic acids carried out by the above-described means.
