The device (1) has a tailstock (6) for coaxial alignment of a shaft (3) with respect to a hub (2) of a functional element (4) i.e. cam (4a) or gear wheels. A centering cone (7) is axially adjustable with regard to the tailstock. The centering cone is coupled such that a set of expandable centering elements (8) is moved in a radial direction during axial displacement of the cone. The centering elements occupy a defined position against the hub in the functional element in an extended position, and a movable guide carriage (9) is provided for the shaft. An independent claim is also included for a method for assembling a thermal shaft.
