A method of controlling a water current turbine 1 which includes a rotor assembly 10 arranged to drive a generator 12 comprises determining (101) loading characteristics for the turbine; determining (102) an acceptable range of output power levels; receiving (103) a power signal indicative of a desired generator output power level; receiving (104) a generator rotational speed signal; producing (105) a generator torque control signal in dependence on the speed signal, the acceptable range of output power levels, and the determined loading characteristics for the turbine, and supplying (106) the generator torque control signal to the generator. The generator torque control signal causes the generator 12 to operate at a rotational speed which produces a generator output power level in the acceptable range and which produces a desired turbine loading condition. |
