A method for determining a first set of one or more parameters for configuring a system having a multi-dimensional parameter-space, the method comprising: evaluating a behavior of the system over a predetermined selection of parameter values for a second set of parameters, which includes selecting a plurality of discrete parameterization values spanning an input parameterization value range for each of the parameters in the second set,forming a first map by selecting a discrete parameterization value for each parameter in the second set to form a first total set of discrete parameterization values,measuring a characteristic of the system for the first map,forming a second map by selecting a discrete parameterization value for each parameter in the second set to form a second total set of discrete parameterization values,measuring the characteristic of the system for the second map,comparing the first map and the second map to each other or to a reference map to form a comparison measure; and deriving, based on the comparison measure and using a multidimensional scaling (MDS) algorithm, the first set of one or more parameters to configure the system based on the evaluated behavior of the system, wherein the number of parameters in the first set is fewer than the number of parameters in the second set.
