[Class 100 (iv)] In a typewriter or analogous machine wherein entries are required to be made on more than one sheet and at least one sheet is fed directly by the platen and the others by transverse members carried by bands, the bands are actuated by spring drums under the control of escapement devices. The bands may be actuated manually or automatically through a connection between the normal line spacing mechanism and the 'escapement mechanism. Attached to the carriage of the machine are two plates 10 to which are pivoted at 11 a pair of arms 14. Bands 19, 20 carrying cross members 34, 35 to which the ends of additional sheets B, C may be attached, pass over guide rollers 15, 16 and 12, 13 on the arms 14 and pivot 11 respectively. At one end the bands 19, 20 are wound on spring drums 17 on the arms 14 and at the other end are wound on drums 21, 22 respectively on shafts 23, 24 mounted on the plates 10. The shafts 23, 24 are geared to cranks 31, 32 at one end by which they can be rotated manually in opposition to the spring drums to register the additional sheets with the main sheet and at the other end are connected by escapement mechanism, Fig. 8, for normal line-spacing operation. Each escapement comprises a ratchet-and-pawl device 39, 41 with an additional pawl 42 which when actuated releases the retaining pawl 41 and engages the ratchet disc 39. The pawls 42 corresponding to the two shafts 23, 24 are linked together by a member 44 and connected to the line-spacing mechanism 45 of the typewriter. Manual linespacing of each band can be effected by fingerpieces 43 connected to the pawls 41. The bands converge towards the platen beneath which are guides 46 for the sheets. The arms 14 are held in operative position by links 33, but can be folded back against the plates 10.
