PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal layer forming composition which enables efficient manufacture of a defect-free uniform liquid crystal layer and has a longer pot life than the prior art.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer forming composition comprises: a liquid crystal compound including two or more polymerizable functional groups in each molecule and having a refractive index anisotropy of 0.2 or more; a solvent having a cyclic ketone structure; a solvent having a cyclic ether structure; an antioxidant exhibiting volatility at a temperature lower than the N-I point of the liquid crystal compound; and a compound represented by a given general formula.
