A dental apparatus 100 comprises a sensor 105, such as an acceleration sensor or a capacitive or bending sensor which is arranged within a gripping body 101 without causing unevenness or discontinuities of the homogenous outer surface of the body for hygiene and cleaning purposes. The sensor 105 measures user input to the body, such as tapping, rotation, bending or compression forces or other predefined motions and provides associated signals to control an activating component 103 of treating component 102 of a functional device such as a dental light, drill or brush via a control unit 106 within the body 101. A temperature senor 108 may also be provided to detect the presence of a user to avoid unintentional operation. The device may have a detachable energy supply unit 109 or have mains connection. |
