[Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] Describes lever means for controlling the operating tube 27 of a motor vehicle changespeed gear column shifter of the kind set out in Specification 619,550. As described in that Specification, the tube carries a bracket pivotally supporting a hand lever, the inner end of which engages a circumferential recess on the fixed steering column. In the present embodiment, the bracket 62 is screwed to the tube 27, and the inner end 67 of the hand lever 36 engages between circumferential flanges 68, 69 secured to the column 20, while the resilient sleeve 74 cushioning vertical rotation of the lever is extended past the boss 70 formed on the lever to prevent rotary backlash. A fixed steering head is dispensed with, the steering shaft 55 rotating in a fabric bushing 58 in the column 20 and a recess 57 being provided in the rotatable steering head 26 to take the tipper ends of the tube 27 and column 20, which are spaced by a second bushing 60.
