The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for detecting an obstacle. The apparatus for detecting an obstacle according to the present invention includes a position compensation unit that compensates a position of a second image based on a first image based on a vehicle movement distance between the first image and the second image of different time points; a vehicle image generation unit that generates vehicle images according to differences between the first image and the second image and between the first image and the position-compensated second image; a computation unit that binarizes the vehicle images according to the difference values of the vehicle images and generates a synthetic image with respect to the two vehicle images based on pixel bit values corresponding to the two binarized vehicle images; and an obstacle detection unit that detects an obstacle after selecting the pixel corresponding to an area where the bit value is detected from the synthetic image.
