PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method enabling easy production of a base material for a multicore optical fiber in which core parts are arranged accurately at designed positions.SOLUTION: A method of producing a base material 3 for a multicore optical fiber includes a hole part formation step of forming a plurality of hole parts in a nearly columnar glass body 22 to prepare a glass pipe 22 and a heating integration step of inserting a core rod into each of the hole parts of the glass pipe 22 and integrating the resultant body by heating to produce a base material 3 for a multicore optical fiber. When a distance between a center position of a peripheral core part not positioned on the central axis and the central axis is denoted by d, a radius of a peripheral core rod corresponding to the peripheral core part by r, a radius of the peripheral hole part in which is inserted the peripheral core rod by R, and a distance between a center position of the peripheral hole part and the central axis by D, the peripheral hole part is formed in a hole part formation step at a position satisfying a relational expression d<D≤d+R-r on a straight line connecting the center position of the peripheral core part to the central axis. |
