PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method enabling easy production of a base material for a multicore optical fiber in which core parts are arranged accurately at designed positions.SOLUTION: A method of producing a base material 3 for a multicore optical fiber includes a hole part formation step of forming a plurality of hole parts in a nearly columnar glass body 22 to prepare a glass pipe 22 and a heating integration step of inserting a core rod into each of the hole parts of the glass pipe 22 and integrating the resultant body by heating to produce a base material 3 for a multicore optical fiber.
