According to a method of encoding/decoding a high definition image and an apparatus to perform the same, a size of a prediction unit to encode is set to an expanded macroblock size in accordance to a temporal frequency characteristic or a special frequency characteristic in at least one picture for encoding, movement prediction and movement compensation are performed in units of the set prediction unit size, and conversion is performed. Also, after dividing a macroblock having a 32x32 pixels or a 64x64 pixels size to at least one partition based on an edge, encoding is performed for each divided partition. Therefore, encoding efficiency of a high definition image having high definition (HD) level or higher can be improved. |
