The method involves determining distance actual value (AI) and comparison value (Sv) for displacement (S) of a ball race (3) and/or a holding frame (2) i.e. gantry frame, during rotation of the ball race by a sensor system (7). The actual value and the comparison value are compared with a reference value (Gs). A measure (M) for preventing increasing of the displacement of the ball race is met when the actual and comparison values exceed the reference value. Distance measurement is executed between the holding frame and a reference object (10) for determining the actual and comparison values. An independent claim is also included for a computer tomograph.
