The invention relates to a backrest for people with postural support needs. The backrest comprises a substrate having a plurality of attachment apertures located on the substrate in a regular arrangement. The attachment apertures are adapted to allow one or more lateral supports to be attached to the substrate by securing the lateral support(s) to the substrate with an attachment system that engages with one or more attachment apertures. By locating the attachment apertures on the substrate in a regular arrangement, the lateral support(s) can be attached to the substrate at a desired height and at a desired distance from the centre of the substrate.
