Provided are an apparatus for processing adaptive video and a method of scaling video, which generate a graphical user interface (GUI) so that a GUI suitable for the screen size of a display device can be displayed according to the screen size of the display device. The apparatus can realize a GUI most suitable for the screen size of an external display device connected to the apparatus by enlarging or reducing the size of the GUI according to the screen size of the external display device, or by changing the arrangement of items arranged on the GUI.

1. An apparatus for processing an image, which provides image data corresponding to the image to an external display device, the apparatus comprising:
an internal display device configured to display the image, wherein the internal display device has a screen having a first horizontal image dimension and a first vertical image dimension; a video scaler configured to scale the image data according to a ratio of the first horizontal image dimension of the screen of the internal display device to a second horizontal image dimension of a screen of the external display device and a ratio of the first vertical image dimension of the screen of the internal display device to a second vertical image dimension of the screen of the external display device; a processor configured to determine a scaling ratio of a graphic user interface (GUI) based on information about a size of the screen of the external display device, and to scale the GUI according to the determined scaling ratio; and an output unit configured to provide the scaled image data and the scaled GUI to the external display device, such that the external display device displays the scaled image data and the scaled GUI, wherein the scaling ratio of the GUI is different from either the ratio of the first horizontal image dimension of the screen of the internal display device to the second horizontal image dimension of the screen of the external display device or the ratio of the first vertical image dimension of the screen of the internal display device to the second vertical image dimension of the screen of the external display device.
