Provided are a portable device and a method for controlling an external device thereof. The method for controlling the external device of the portable device is configured to display a remote control UI capable of controlling the external device if a predetermined user command is input while the portable terminal maintains a lock mode, and performs pairing with the external device in order to control the external device using the remote control UI. Therefore, a user will be able to use the portable terminal to control the external device immediately and conveniently.
