Relates to firearms adapted for practice fire with small pellets by inserting an air gun into the breech and bore of the firearm after removal of the breech bolt. According to the invention, the piston of the air gun, which is cocked against strong spring action, is retained in cocked position by a device relieving the pressure of the air-gun spring on the trigger-operated sear of the firearm, which device is automatically released following release of the sear. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the firearm to be adapted is shown in chain lines, the air-gun attachment, held by a leafspring clip 20 being shown in full lines with, the air-piston 6, and air gun barrel 3 attached thereto, moved rearwards for cocking into engagement with a rear member 16 arranged between the firearm sear C and the bent 9a of the yielding sleeve 9 of the air-gun piston. Fig. 4 shows in plan the lever mechanism for cocking the air-gun piston spring 14. On swinging a lever 23 clockwise about pivot 26, a connecting link 22 acts to slide a bar 21 on the air cylinder 1, a projection 21a on the bar engaging a member 5a on a sleeve 5 fast with the air barrel 3 thereby compressing the spring 14 against a fixed abutment 2 and moving the air piston 6 until the bent 9a, Fig. 6, moves past sear 16 and engages by spring arms 13 with a stop-ring 12 to retain the piston in cocked position. On release of the triggeroperated gun sear C, the member 16 is moved forwards by the bent 9a and, whilst extending the spring 19, is rocked aside by a cam surface 16a, the full force of the air spring serving automatically to release the spring arms 13 and the air piston. Air under pressure is then forced through holes 3a into the air barrel to expel the pellet loaded by a removable plug 15.
