The furniture has a shelf (3) including an opening (4) hinged at a proximal end (4p) relative to a bracket (2) by a hinge unit along a pivot (6). The shelf includes another opening (7) hinged at another proximal end (7p) relative to a distal end (4d) of the former opening by another hinge unit along another pivot (9) parallel to the former pivot, where a thickness of the shelf is decreasing towards a distal end (7d) of the latter opening. A desk is adapted to accommodate an approximately flat object such as book, when the shelf is in a retracted position.
