Class 51 (i) [Also in Group XXXI] A liquid-fuel locomotive furnace is provided with an air-intake 13, Fig. 1, the cross-section of which is varied by adjustable vanes 48, a fire-box having a grate 4 above the air-intake and a plurality of superposed layers of balls, made of refractory material, disposed on the grate. Disposed in the air-intake 13 is a blade wheel 14 which, under the action of the inflowing air, produces a torque which is transmitted to a transmission shaft 60, Fig. 2, journalled in a casing 20. The angular displacement of shaft 60, which is proportional to the square of the velocity of the air in the intake, is converted, by means of a converter A, into a movement linearly proportional to the air velocity which is indicated by a pointer 133 secured to an element 71 freely rotatable on a control shaft 73. The shaft 73 may be coupled to the element 71 through a clutch mechanism B or, as shown, may be coupled to a regulating lever a. Movement of shaft 73 is transmitted by gear mechanism C and cam and link mechanism D to the fuel valves, a lever c providing for adjustment of this movement to suit the viscosity of the fuel. Fuel burners 10, Fig. 1, and steam jets 12 are provided in the fire-box, the fuel being pre-heated in a heat-exchanger 32.</p>
