A portable terminal and a method for writing a message are provided to enable a user to generate a picture emoticon directly by using an image and insert the generated picture emoticon to a message, thereby transmitting a multimedia message. A control unit recognizes that a user writes a message(S203) during a message writing mode(S201). The control unit checks whether a picture emoticon insertion function is selected(S205). When the picture emoticon insertion function is selected, the control unit checks whether an image photographing function is selected(S207). When the image photographing function is selected, the control unit drives a camera to photograph an image(S209). The control unit checks whether to generate the photographed image by a picture emoticon(S211). |
