An apparatus and a method for controlling an automatic gain of a receiver to improve power efficiency in a low power mode of a terminal are provided to reduce power consumption by reducing a calculation load with reference to a receiver of the terminal. An apparatus for controlling an automatic gain of a receiver to improve power efficiency in a low power mode of a terminal includes a variable gain amplifier, a signal generation unit, and a control unit. The variable gain amplifier is located on a front end of an analog-digital converter. The signal generation unit controls the variable gain amplifier. The control unit has a BBP(Base Band digital Processor) which performs a coarse-AGC(Automatic Gain Control) at an analog signal step by varying a time constant through a change of R and C without a calculation of the BBP. A fine AGC is implemented by adjusting a mutual ratio with an applied output value through the calculation of the BBP terminal. |
