Provided are a method and an apparatus for adjusting image brightness. The method comprises: obtaining a to-be-processed image, and obtaining a single-channel brightness image according to a grayscale of each channel of the to-be-processed image; performing a Gaussian filter on the single-channel brightness image to obtain a Gaussian filter image; adjusting a grayscale of the Gaussian filter image; comparing the Gaussian filter image after adjustment with the Gaussian filter image before the adjustment to obtain a grayscale change rate of each pixel point before and after the adjustment; processing the to-be-processed image to obtain a processed image; and outputting the processed image. Processing the grayscale of each channel of the image fully utilizes an expression capacity of an entire color channel. Performing the Gaussian filter on the single-channel brightness image ensures integral continuity of the image. Adjusting the Gaussian filter image according to a preset ratio makes a shadow and a highlight area in the Gaussian filter image tend to be neutral and be more suitable for human-eye observation.
