PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce user discomfort, and to surely improve the accuracy of determining document presence by performing shading correction in a length specifying process.SOLUTION: A reading control unit 170 is configured in such a way that, in a plurality of presence determination processes individually corresponding to a plurality of pre-assumed lighting conditions with regard to an LED array provided with a plurality of LED elements, a plurality of shading correction data for correcting for shading the output from an image pickup element corresponding to a lighting condition in the presence determination process among a plurality of image pickup elements each provided in a CCD 153 are pre-stored in a ROM 170c of the reading control unit 170, and a process used in determining document presence by correcting for shading the output from the image pickup element on the basis of the result of loading the one among the plurality of shading correction data stored in the ROM which corresponds to a lighting condition in the presence determination process is executed in the presence determination process.
