Disclosed is a method for laser marking an egg shell (322). The method includes controlling a laser beam (303b) directed onto an area of the egg shell (322) so as to discolor an outer layer of the egg shell (322) without completely etching away the outer layer at the area of the egg shell (322). This is achieved by sweeping the laser beam (303b) multiple times across the area of the egg shell.
