PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress deterioration in image quality of an image without increasing the number of manufacturing steps.SOLUTION: In an imaging element having a plurality of pixels, each phase difference detection pixel generating a signal for performing focus determination by phase difference detection comprises: a photoelectric converter formed on a semiconductor substrate; and a metal member formed between the semiconductor substrate and a wiring layer provided thereon. A part of the metal member is formed as a light shielding member shielding a part of light entered into the photoelectric converter. This technology can be applied to a CMOS image sensor, for example.
