[Also in Group II] Apparatus for separating and sorting flat objects of circular, oval, or other shape, such as coins or pharmaceutical tablets, comprises a horizontal rotary feeding plate 1, a rotary incised separating disc 4 which partially overlaps the plate 1 and is partially surrounded by a ledge 13 and a stationary plate 12 which lies under the disc 4 and has a series of apertures 16-20 of progressively increasing width. The plate 1 and disc 4 rotate in opposite directions so that their overlapping portions move in the same direction and the plate 1 is arranged to rotate more quickly than the disc 4 so that the coins are initially pressed into the incisions until an overlapping portion 21 of the ledge 13 is reached. The wedge shape of the portion 21 ensures that only one coin is carried round in each incision by removing any coins that have not lodged against the leading wall of the incision. The trailing wall of the incision then forces the coin against the ledge 13 until it meets an aperture 16-20 which is large enough to allow it to tilt and fall down a discharge funnel past an electric contact or a photo-electric cell operating counting means. Both walls of the incisions are non-radial, with the leading wall undercutting the disc circumference; the leading wall may be curved concavely and may have recesses to accommodate three coins at a time. The counting of the separated coins may be done separately by an incised separating disc feeding the coins to a discharge funnel having counting means operated electrically or by a photo-electric cell or by mechanical means that automatically stop the separating disc when a predetermined number of coins have been counted. |
