Cushioning pads of a draft gear are held in alignment with each other by complementary recesses and projections as described in Specification 686,211 and the end pads are held in aligned positions with respect to the followers by means of tabs 55 formed integrally with the metal inserts 51 and bent over into recesses 57 formed in the followers prior to assembly of the draft gear into its pocket.
