An electrode adapted to be connected to one pole of a D.C. supply and to be drawn through a pipe for applying a coating of bitumen to the interior wall thereof, comprises two or more tubular sections 1, 2, 3 of electrically - conductive material, e.g. copper, assembled end to end with intermediate insulating spacers 4 arranged to permit flexure of the electrode and, in conjunction with a spacer 7, 11 at each end of the electrode, to support the sections 1 ... 3 clear of the wall. Current is supplied to the leading section 1 and to sections 3 by leads 31 connected to a ring 29 in a connector plug P at the leading end of the electrode, and to trailing section 2 by leads 33 from a central flexible rod 5 which is insulated by a sleeve 27 from the plate 29 and has an end cap 26. An ammeter is included in the lead from the rod 5 to the D.C. supply whereby the speed of travel of the electrode through the pipe can be adjusted to give a zero reading on the ammeter, i.e. when the pipe is well coated with bitumen near the trailing section 2. A collar 28 on the sleeve 27 secures the rod 5 at that end, and the far end of the rod 5 is secured and resiliently urged outwardly by a spring 18 in a sleeve 14 in an end cap 12.
